Help with BP Notebook on iPhone, iPad and Android. If you can't find an answer here, email us.
If you have a medical emergency, call your local emergency number now. BP Notebook cannot call for help, and we cannot give medical advice.
How to use the app
In these steps, “the menu” means the button with three dots at the top of the Home screen.
Add a reading
- Take your reading with your own monitor, meter, scale or thermometer.
- On the Home screen, tap Add reading, or tap the type of reading you want, such as blood pressure or weight.
- Type the numbers. For blood pressure, type the top number (systolic), then the bottom number (diastolic), and the pulse if you have it. You can add the arm, your position and a note.
- Tap Save.
To change or delete a reading, open History (the list icon at the top of the Home screen), tap the reading, then tap Edit or Delete. After deleting, you can tap Undo for a short time.
Make a PDF report or a CSV file
- On the Home screen, tap the Export report icon at the top.
- Choose the dates and the types of readings to include.
- Tap Create PDF for a report you can show your doctor, or Export CSV for a spreadsheet file.
- Choose where to send or save the file, for example email, a messaging app or Files.
In the free version, each PDF starts with a short ad. If no ad is available, you still get your PDF. CSV export is free and has no ad.
Back up your data
- Open the menu and tap Backup & restore (also in Settings › Your data).
- Tap Back up now.
- Save the file somewhere safe that is not only on this phone, for example Google Drive, iCloud Drive, or an email to yourself.
A normal backup is not encrypted, so keep it private. With Pro you can tap Back up with a passphrase to lock the file, and turn on Automatic weekly backup. Automatic backups are saved in the app's own folder on the phone, so also make a copy elsewhere from time to time.
Restore a backup
- Open the menu, tap Backup & restore, then Restore from file.
- Pick your BP Notebook backup file (it ends in .bpnotebook). If it is encrypted, type its passphrase.
- Check what is in the backup, then choose:
- Merge to add the readings and reminders that are not on this phone yet, or
- Replace to remove what is on this phone and use the backup instead.
Set reminders
- Open the menu and tap Reminders (also in Settings).
- Tap Add reminder, choose the time and days, and tap Save reminder.
- If your phone asks, allow notifications.
The free version includes 2 reminders. Pro removes the limit.
Restore a purchase
If you bought Pro before, for example on an old phone, sign in to the same Apple Account or Google account on your phone, then open Settings › Purchases › Restore purchases. You can also tap Restore purchases on the BP Notebook Pro screen. To cancel a subscription, use your store account: Apple or Google Play.
Change your ad choices
- In the app, open Settings › Privacy › Privacy options to change your answers to Google's consent message. This item appears in places where the consent rules apply, such as Europe, the UK and some US states.
- On iPhone and iPad, open the phone's Settings › Privacy & Security › Tracking to allow or stop tracking for BP Notebook.
- On Android, you can reset or delete your advertising ID in the phone's settings (often Settings › Privacy › Ads or Settings › Google › Ads).
- BP Notebook Pro removes all ads.
Delete all your data
Open Settings › Your data › Delete all data and confirm twice. This removes all readings, reminders and settings from this phone and can't be undone, so make a backup first if you may want your readings later. It also deletes the automatic backups in the app's Backups folder and the last report or backup you shared. Backup files and reports you saved elsewhere are not removed; delete them in the Files app, your file manager or the service you saved them to if you want. Uninstalling the app also removes its data from the phone.
Units, categories and text size
- Change units (for example mmHg or kPa, mg/dL or mmol/L, kg or lb) in Settings › Units.
- Choose the blood pressure table (AHA/ACC or ESC) in Settings › Blood pressure categories, where you can also read about the categories and their sources.
- For larger text, make the text bigger in your phone's settings; the app follows it. For stronger colors, choose High contrast in Settings › Appearance.
Questions and answers
Does the app measure my blood pressure?
No. BP Notebook does not use your phone's camera or sensors and cannot take any reading. Use your own blood pressure monitor (or other device), then type the numbers into the app. No phone app can take your blood pressure with the phone alone.
Where is my data stored?
Only on your phone, inside the app. There is no account and no BP Notebook server, so we cannot see your readings. They leave your phone only when you share a report or save a backup. Read more in our Privacy Policy.
How do I move my readings to a new phone?
- On the old phone, make a backup with Back up now and save it somewhere you can open from the new phone, such as Google Drive, iCloud Drive or an email to yourself.
- Install BP Notebook on the new phone.
- Open Backup & restore › Restore from file and pick the backup.
The backup file format is the same on iPhone and Android. If you have Pro, tap Restore purchases on the new phone. Pro moves between phones that use the same Apple Account or the same Google account; a purchase made on one store does not carry over to the other store.
I forgot the passphrase for my encrypted backup.
We are sorry, but it can't be recovered. The passphrase is never sent to us, and without it the file cannot be opened by anyone, including us. If you still have the readings on your phone, make a new backup and write the new passphrase down somewhere safe.
I lost my phone or deleted the app. Can you get my readings back?
Only from a backup you made. We do not keep a copy of your data. If you used iCloud Backup on iPhone, restoring that phone backup may also bring the app's data back.
What do the blood pressure categories mean?
They show where a reading falls in the American Heart Association / American College of Cardiology table (the default) or the European Society of Cardiology table. They are for information only and are not a diagnosis. Please talk to your doctor about your numbers.
Why did I see a “Very high reading” notice?
The app shows this notice when a blood pressure reading is above 180/120, based on advice from the American Heart Association. Follow the steps on the notice. If you have symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, back pain, numbness, weakness, vision changes or difficulty speaking, call your local emergency number now.
My reminders don't appear.
Check that notifications are allowed for BP Notebook in your phone's settings. On some Android phones, battery saving can delay reminders; allowing BP Notebook to run without battery restrictions can help. Reminders may arrive a few minutes late, so the app doesn't need special alarm permissions.
Why are there ads, and are they safe?
Ads keep the app free. They come from Google and never use your readings or other health information. We ask Google to show only ads suitable for a general audience and block some sensitive categories. Pro removes all ads. If an ad seems wrong, please report it.
Which languages does the app support?
The app is available in many languages and follows your phone's language. You can choose another language in Settings › Language. This website is in English.
Report an ad
Many ads show a small AdChoices icon (a triangle with an “i”) or an “Ad” label you can tap to learn why you see the ad or to report it to Google. You can also email us: tell us roughly when you saw the ad, what it showed, and, if you can, include a screenshot. We will review it and block the advertiser or category if needed.
